Arunachal Pradesh: PM Modi’s Firm Stance Against China’s Claims

On April 8, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message regarding Arunachal Pradesh, reiterating India’s unwavering claim over the state in the face of China’s assertions. The Prime Minister’s statement comes amid a period of heightened tensions and frequent claims by China over parts of the northeastern state12.

PM Modi emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh has always been, is, and will always remain an inseparable part of India. This declaration was made during a time when China has been actively renaming several areas in Arunachal Pradesh, a move seen as an attempt to reinforce its territorial claims2.

The Prime Minister also underscored the rapid development initiatives reaching Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast, likening them to the swift arrival of the morning sun. He highlighted the recent inauguration of developmental projects worth Rs 55,000 crore in the state, including the Sela Tunnel, which is expected to be a strategic game-changer by providing all-weather connectivity to Tawang1.

Furthermore, PM Modi pointed out the significant improvements in the quality of life for the people of Arunachal Pradesh, with around 35,000 families receiving pucca houses and 45,000 households benefiting from a drinking water supply initiative1.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Itanagar in March for the ‘Viksit Bharat, Viksit Northeast’ programme and the subsequent developmental projects are a testament to the central government’s commitment to the state’s integration and progress within the Indian Union2.

In his interview with the Assam Tribune, PM Modi left no room for doubt about Arunachal Pradesh’s status as an integral part of India, sending a clear message to China and the international community about India’s stance on the matter2. The Prime Minister’s firm reply is a reflection of India’s resolve to maintain its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
